Investing in our security officers proves worthwhile for a 6-year-old patient
Code 9 Security ensures its colleagues are trained to deal with a wide range of eventualities, and on Saturday, this proved worthwhile. One of our security officers came across a young 6-year-old boy who had fallen and suffered a significant knee injury.
The young boy was distressed and was reluctant to show anyone his injury – including his mum. Luckily, our colleague was able to work with his mum to convince him to allow us to assess his injury, which ultimately had exposed bone and tendon.
Good fortune assisted us with a passing paediatric surgeon from Southampton Children’s Hospital who kindly took a look at the injury, giving Mum some useful advice on what to expect – as well as ensuring we had taken all reasonable steps to prevent the injury from worsening, promote recovery and preserving comfort and dignity.
Saturday was a busy day for the ambulance service too, and unfortunately, this meant we could not seek the assistance of a paramedic. Nevertheless, working with the patient’s mum, we arranged alternative transport to assist get the young patient to the hospital, but not before preparing him for transport using splints and wound dressings.
While dealing with this incident, we managed to distract the young patient from the scale of his injuries – and we learned a lot about the bad guys in Spiderman, too! We also managed to avoid him seeing the nature of his wound to try and minimise distress.
Situations such as this highlight the sound investment Code 9 Security makes in first aid training and, more generally, in our colleagues’ skills. Further, engaging with people of all ages positively proved invaluable, ensuring the patient got the help he needed while working with Mum to manage the situation.
Investing in our security officers and colleagues is just one way we stand out from our peers and deliver quality and value to our clients.
